A Unique Solution to An Old Problem of Osteoarthritis

A natural solution for arthritis

Arthritis is a condition in which one or more of your joints are inflamed. There’s no cure for arthritis, certain supplements can help fight inflammation and joint pain, which in turn helps ease the pain many people live with on a daily basis.

The most common form of arthritis is called osteoarthritis, where inflammation of the joints due to wear and tear, resulted in the breakdown of cartilage. Cartilage is the slick tissue that covers and cushions the ends of the bones in a joint.

Joint inflammation is most commonly found in the knees, hips, spine, and hands. When you are prescribed a pain killer (NSAID), it works by suppressing the inflammation process at the joint, thus allowing the joints to heal and repair naturally. However, NSAIDs are also reported to display various side effects, from inducing gastric problems to serious problem like increase risk of heart diseases.

Osteoarthritis is a progressive joint disease that affects commonly among the elderly. Limited joints mobility and flexibility do affect the daily life quality of an Osteoarthritis patient..

Collagen for joint health?

As we age and get older, the production of collagen begins to slow down, as with most processes in the body. When this happens, our skin becomes less elastic and more fragile. You may also notice that your hair begins to lose its colour and your joints aren’t as flexible.

A little known fact about collagen is that there are many different types - at least 16 different types within the human body. But around 85% to 90% of it consist of types 1 and 2. Collagen type 1 is the most abundant; it’s also the strongest, helping to form bones and support the GI tract. It’s important for healing and gives skin its elastic quality and integrity. Collagen type 2 is found primarily in cartilage in connective tissues to help support joint health.

One of the cheapest and easiest ways to boost collagen around your joints is to make your own bone broth using animal bones and crustacean or egg shells. These dinner scraps happen to be some of the best sources of glucosamine, chondroitin, various amino acids, and hyaluronic acid - which acts as a joint cushion and lubricant.

An alternative to bone broth is a supplement called UC-II® (undenatured type 2 collagen), which is derived from chicken sternum. A solid body of research reveals that it can rebuild cartilage, relieve arthritic pain, improve mobility and extension, and enhance quality of life.

Bone broth is one of the easier and cheaper way of getting collagen supply from the daily meals.

UC-II® improves knees function and articular cartilage

UC-II® is a patented form of collagen with undenatured (native) type 2 collagen for joint health support. A small 40mg amount daily is proven to work by inducing a process known as oral tolerance, which prevents immune system from damaging its own cartilage, ultimately stops inflammatory damages, repair joint cartilage and improve joint functions and joint health.

UC-II® (right) is small and convenient to swallow compared to the conventional glucosamine and chondroitin tablets.

UC-II® works to modulate and reduce the body’s abnormal immune response at the joints that causes inflammation and damages of joint tissues and cartilage. Stopping inflammations not just help to stop further joint damages, it also allows accelerated repair and rebuild processes of the joints.

Results from a new study published in the Osteoarthritis and Cartilage Journal indicate that an undenatured native chicken UC-II® collagen ingredient supplied by Lonza from Basel Switzerland helps to attenuate joint-health symptoms associated with osteoarthritis, including joint pain and diminished joint mobility.

Researchers posited that the collagen ingredient may offer support for the healing process following the onset of osteoarthritis. They write that currently, glucosamine and chondroitin are the two nutraceuticals most commonly used to provide therapeutic and health benefits to patients suffering from osteoarthritis symptoms, but they add that collagen derivatives may also provide the nutrients required for cartilage repair and maintenance. They also note that collagen is the most prevalent component of the solid phase of articular cartilage, and thus, supplementation with collagen has been considered a key way of preventing damage to the articular cartilage over time and to support the healing process following the onset of osteoarthritis. UC-II® has also recently been studied in human knee osteoarthritis subjects, they write.

UC-II® more effective for osteoarthritis symptoms

Another study published in Nutrition Journal finds that UC-II® more effective at improving symptoms of osteoarthritis than a placebo or glucosamine hydrochloride plus chondroitin sulfate.

The multicentre, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was conducted at 13 centres in southern India, and included 186 volunteers aged 40 to75 years. Participant criteria included moderate-to-severe osteoarthritis by physical examination in one or both knees and knee pain for at least three months prior to the start of the study.

For 180 days, 186 subjects were randomized to consume a daily dose of 40mg UC-II®, 1,500mg of Glucosamine and 1,200mg of Chondroitin or a placebo. At the conclusion of the 180 days trial period, UC-II® significantly improved joint functions, mobility and flexibility compared to placebo using three different assessment tools: WOMAC, VAS and Lequesne functional index:

  • UC-II® works better in improving joint functions and movements, a 39% increase in physical functions and 40% reduction in stiffness at 180 days, compared to placebo and Glucosamine (and Chondroitin).

  • UC-II® also 41% reduction in pain at 180 days compared to placebo and Glucosamine (and Chondroitin), meaning UC-II works better in relieving joint pain.

Researchers concluded that UC-II® "significantly improved knee function in osteoarthritis subjects at 180 days, compared to placebo and Glucosamine (and Chondroitin), and was well-tolerated. Based on the data presented herein, we believe that additional research is warranted both to confirm and to define these findings more extensively."

UC-II® is small and it works!

Taken once a day, UC-II® is proven to works 3 times faster and better than the conventional glucosamine and chondroitin in reducing joint pain, as well as improving joint health, flexibility and mobility. It is derived from natural source - chicken sternum cartilage.

UC-II® is proven to be more effective and great benefits. A small dosage of 40mg once daily dosage in a tiny capsule for easier consumption and works faster as early as one month. As it does not contain shellfish content, it is safe for those allergic to seafood. It is also suitable for diabetics as does not affect blood sugar control.
