Eating Fish or Taking Fish Oil? What Do You Need to Know?

Eating fish is good for health. This is a well-known fact, as shown in many studies. The omega-3 fatty acids (EPA& DHA) in fish bring many health benefits especially to the heart.

The American Heart Association recommends eating oily fish twice a week for general health. For people who have documented heart disease, it is recommended to take 1g EPA& DHA a day and 2-4g EPA& DHA for people who have high fat in blood (hypertriglyceridemia). Generally, 2-3 ounce of fatty fish e.g. salmon, sardine, and mackerel can provide about 1g of EPA& DHA.

While eating fatty fish is a great source of EPA& DHA, there is a concern about mercury with large intake of deep sea fish. Besides, not everyone is a seafood fan. If you don't like fish, have a fish allergy, or you have protein restriction due to deteriorating kidney functions or gout issues, the alternative is to take fish oil supplement- in natural triglyceride form!

Naturally in fish, the fish oil is present in triglyceride form in which our body is accustomed to absorbing and utilizing optimally. In other words, fish oil supplement in the triglyceride form is the same form of omega 3 fatty acids naturally found in fish!

The Benefits of Natural Triglyceride (TG) Fish Oils

  • Natural

Triglyceride is the essential form that required by body naturally for optimal utilization, this is how our have been efficiently digesting and metabolizing these essential fatty acids for thousands of years.

  • Higher absorption

Evidence suggests that triglyceride fish oils are better absorbed in comparison to omega-3 in most fish oil capsules. It is because most fish oils are in a chemically modified form called Ethyl Ester. Higher absorption means better protection for heart.

  • Convenient

Fewer capsules is needed for high dose due to the concentrated EPA&DHA content, with higher absorption.

  • Helps better absorption of fat soluble vitamins such as vitamin D and K

Natural TG fish oil results in 50% more plasma EPA and DHA after absorption in comparison to EE oils.

Fat soluble vitamins are best absorbed into the blood stream when ingested with fat. Taking fish oil especially TG form helps better absorption of vitamin D3 and Vitamin K2, thus promotes better bone and heart health. This is because vitamin D3 promotes calcium absorption and maintains adequate calcium in the bloods while vitamin K2 directs these calcium to the bone, prevent calcium deposit in the arteries.
