Discover Turmeric

Not a big fan of turmeric? A new study might change your mind. Besides having many scientifically-proven health benefits, a breakthrough test shows that daily consumption of a compound in turmeric — the spice that gives Indian curry its bright color, helps improve memory and mood in people with mild, age-related memory loss, according to the results of a study conducted by University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) researchers.

Malaysia will reach ageing nation status in 2030, a mere decade away from now when 15% of its population will be 60 years or older. Are you well prepared to embrace ageing especially your brain health?

Turmeric – the good news for health

Spices are old. They have been valued for their ability to bring other worlds and cultures to our table, to make food delicious, interesting and beautiful well before the advent of these recent discoveries. Every sprinkle also adds a little health bonus due to antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Turmeric has been used for thousands of years in India for both culinary and healing purposes in Ayurveda medicine. Besides being used as the main ingredient in curry power, Ayurveda practitioners in the past have included turmeric in medicines to help a dazzling array of ailments, from relieving arthritis pain and digestive troubles to even as skin care.

The magic compound in turmeric that has healing properties is called curcumin. Over 4000 scientific publications have focused on curcumin in the last decade and have shown that curcumin has positive effects on patients with various modern diseases, such as cardiovascular, diabetes, liver conditions, skin conditions, cancers. In fact, recent studies have also shown that it helps with brain health.

Spices are widely used in Indian cuisine as well as Ayurvedic medicinal practice, and the most prominent among all is Turmeric.

Chronic Inflammation is the cause of brain diseases

Losing one's memory and mental abilities to cognitive decline is something we all fear, and the current statistics on the prevalence of cognitive decline are not pretty. Studies shown that by age 65, sadly 1 in 8 will suffer from severe cognitive decline, and by age 80, an astonishing 1 in 2 will. In Malaysia, a rural community study conducted in Selangor among Malay participants over the age of 60 found the prevalence of cognitive impairment to be at 22.4%.

Accumulating evidence has linked inflammation (an immune response to injury, pathogens, irritants, or oxidative stress) to cognitive decline and risk of dementia. Normally, inflammation is a protective response that facilitates the healing process; however, prolonged inflammation can cause tissue damage.

An illustration of chronic inflammation in the body is similar to constant grilling/barbecue on the fire.

Research found that modern lifestyle, additives & preservatives in food, stress, lack of sleep or rest and many other modern-age living habits, has succumbed the body under a constant condition called “Chronic Inflammation”, where different parts of our body are continuously going through low inflammatory damages. Prolonged, chronic inflammation harms our organs and health. In fact, chronic inflammation is the main culprit of most modern diseases, including heart diseases, diabetes, cancer and brain diseases.

As one gets older, chronic inflammation condition get more severe. Aging decreases the body’s efficiency to wipe off the unwanted inflammatory reactions. Older people have two to four-fold higher levels of inflammatory markers (indicating the severity and extensiveness of inflammation) in the body, causing a phenomenon called “inflammaging.” This explains why higher percentage of modern diseases happens in older age people. However, recent health reports showed that the incidences of modern diseases are getting more common even in younger people - as early as mid-20’s – and with younger people falling prey to heart attacks, diabetes cancers or brain diseases.

Modern, lifestyle related diseases are increasing among the younger generation especially cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer.

Challenges of turmeric in brain health

With an aging population, one of the most intractable problems facing the biomedical research community today is the challenge of developing effective treatment and prevention strategies for brain diseases. As researchers have explored various pharmacological, behavioural, and nutritional intervention options, curcumin has emerged as a potential therapeutic for patients with these conditions. Long recognized for its anti-inflammatory properties and antioxidant activities, scientists have hypothesized that curcumin might be able to combat the inflammation and free radical damage that are associated with a number of brain diseases. There are also evidence that curcumin could modulate multiple target proteins in pathways that had been associated with the pathogenesis of conditions such as dementia.

It is not, until recently, the most promising studies emerged, suggesting the potential benefits of curcumin that were conducted in-vitro and in animal models, while the results of clinical trials were mixed at best. Many human-clinical types of research have used an extremely high dosage of curcumin, as high as 100 teaspoons a day of pure turmeric powder to treat different ailments. The reason is because curcumin’s absorption into the body is poor. Moreover, curcumin is only available in limited amount in turmeric. It is around 3%, by weight. Therefore, high dose of turmeric powder is needed to see the benefits of turmeric. Such a huge amount daily consumption of turmeric powder is totally beyond reasonable to be taken by most people, especially if it’s for long-term to achieve any kind of desired health benefits.

Curcumin, the active ingredient of Turmeric is poorly absorbed and retain in the body due to its large molecule.

Fortunately, thanks to a new technology and innovation, the absorption problem of curcumin is in the past, giving mankind a promise of good health from the good old turmeric. Theravalues Corporation, a Japanese company, has developed an innovative curcumin formulation called Theracurmin®. This high bioavailable curcumin has been proven to be effective in many human clinical trials for all kind of diseases such cancer, cardiovascular diseases and liver diseases. In the new publication of double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, Theracurmin® is also proven to have potential benefits for patients even with a declining brain health. This is forcing the research community to take a second look—to focus on the bioavailability of curcumin supplementation.

Theracurmin® is well dispersed in the water compared to normal curcumin powder.

“Gold Standard” research for curcumin on brain health

Prior to the study, many researchers blamed the failure of previous clinical trials on the low bioavailability of curcumin, which resulted from the fact that the natural form of the curcumin is poorly absorbed, rapidly metabolized, and quickly eliminated from the body.

In March 2018, a new double-blind, placebo-controlled study– scientists “gold standard” design for a research study published in the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry — showed that bioavailable form of curcumin - Theracurmin® can protect the brain. Dr. Gary Small, of the Longevity Center at the University of California, Los Angeles, and colleagues have tested curcumin on 40 adults aged between 51 and 84, all of whom had mild memory problems. For a total of 18 months, the participants were randomized to one of two groups. One group took 90 milligrams of a bioavailable form of curcumin twice daily, while the other group took a placebo.

At study baseline, all participants underwent standard cognitive tests, and these were repeated every 6 months throughout the study, as well as at the end of the study. Additionally, 30 of the subjects — 15 of whom who were receiving curcumin — had positron emission tomography (PET) scans of their brain at the beginning and end of the study. These scans were conducted in order to assess levels of the beta-amyloid and tau, which are proteins that are considered a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease. Research has suggested that an increase in levels of beta-amyloid and tau can occur up to 15 years before symptoms of Alzheimer's arise, suggesting that the proteins may be an early indicator of the disease.

Theracurmin® recent study on brain health shows promising result in improving the cognitive function and memory among the elderly.

Results revealed that the subjects who took curcumin twice daily demonstrated a 28 percent improvement in memory tests over the course of the study, while those who took the placebo showed no significant memory improvements. Subjects who received curcumin also experienced slight improvements in mood, unlike those who took the placebo. What is more, participants who took curcumin also had lower levels of beta-amyloid and tau in the hypothalamus and amygdala brain regions, which are regions that play key roles in memory and emotion.

Not all curcumins are the same

Not all curcumin supplements in the market are created the same. Due to curcumin’s chemical properties, it can be difficult for the body to absorb. A poorly absorbed curcumin supplement cannot be used reduce inflammation and prevent modern diseases.

To overcome this obstacle, Theravalues Corporation, a Japanese company, has developed an innovative curcumin formulation called Theracurmin® that enhances the absorption of curcumin by 2700%. This new technology and innovation has truly left the absorption problem of curcumin in the past, giving mankind a promise of good health from the good old turmeric. Theracurmin® is made from ultra-fine granulation and suspension technology, converting turmeric powder into sub-micron particles called nano-molecular curcumin. It can be rapidly absorbed within 1 hour and retained as long as 24 hours in the body, allowing the body to obtain fast and longer protection against inflammation, thus able to deliver all the impressive health benefits, which studies have shown that it extends even to the brain.

Theracurmin® - Less for More

Taking a low dosage of 180mg of Theracurmin®, which equivalent to 100 teaspoons of turmeric powder, is the most convenient and effective way to achieve the desired results. It is important to take sufficient curcumin on daily basis to protect ourselves from modern diseases.

The modern lifestyle has eased lives; on the other hand it also causes negative effects on our health. Constantly on unhealthy diet such as high sugar content or processed food, sleep deprivation, stress or smoking is exposing our body to chronic inflammation, which leads to chronic inflammation. With the Japanese patented technology, Theracurmin® is able to stay in the body for up to 24 hours to find against chronic inflammation and help to prevent modern diseases.

Theracurmin® is one of the most comprehensive clinical research of curcumin powder in the market. It is now available in capsule for easy consumption. It is scientifically proven for preventing and treating diseases involving heart, liver, lung, muscles, skin, and even cancers. With its extensive trials, it is said to be the most human trialed turmeric powder in the world, going beyond to even benefit the brain.

Spices for healing are an old belief with a modern incarnation. Fight modern diseases such as brain diseases with Mother Nature. Use turmeric powder as the “king” of spices to prevent inflammation. Always choose the right turmeric, such as Theracurmin® that has high absorption and bioavailability, with strong medical research to support its usage in keeping modern diseases at bay and even your brain health at its peak. Theracurmin® is one of the best health insurance you could get for yourself.
